My seven year old is just starting to read chapter books which has left us in this transition phase from children’s books to full chapter books. She still really loves the pictures but is ready to read harder more involved content. So I have really enjoyed explored children’s graphic novels with her. There is a great series out right now by Mitch Krpata & Jeff Kinney that is based on an online gaming environment called Poptropica. Currently there are three books in the series, we are reading the second book The Lost Expedition.
Each book features a comic strip/graphic novel style that uses fully illustrated images along with short dialogue that is both intriguing and keeps her captivated in the series. The books are actually based on an online game called Poptropica. We were actually unaware of the game platform and have since started playing the game as well. It free and available online. These books are based on the characters and story lines behind the game.
The illustrations, drawn by Kory Merritt are just stunning and beautiful. My seven year old loves looking at the pictures. It gives her more age appropriate material to read but still includes images that peak her interest. Designed much like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books they are a great way to keep her interested and reading.
Poptropica makes a great holiday gift. Whether you get them one book in the series or the entire series they are great gift ideas. I love to give my kids presents that promote education and reading. They love getting new books too, especially when it is a series that they really like.
The books can be purchase on Amazon.
